Solving the Problem So, I started searching for the answer (Yes, I used Bing).  Notice that I made the point earlier that my site is a WebForms Website, not to make I also tried it on another test machine running Windows 7 – also updated to the latest patches and I saw the same behavior there! When accessing unauthorized URLs, instead of going to login.aspx, I’d instead get redirected to: http://localhost/TimeTrakkerWeb/Account/Login Yup that’s an MVC style default route to the Account Controller’s Login method. This will likely affect any WebForms application that has been updated to .NET 4.0 or later (definitely 4.5).

So this is not a universal problem apparently but somehow selective. We replaced the old variant with the new, but with this assembly referenced we would be redirected to the /Account/Login URL as listed in this post. Microsoft makes no warranties, express or implied.

In my case, we are using Windows Auth and controller actions are tied to certain groups so lookup are done. Thanks to James Crowley from the AspInsiders list who had run into this as well and pointed me at this fix. Forms authentication participates in the ASP.NET page life cycle through the FormsAuthenticationModule class. I'm not sure why I hadn't come across this before.
