It says "world of warcraft is downloading a patch" and after 'patching' is completed the Config file is no longer in read only status. I have a reasonable end machine at best, but I turned the **** thing straight back on again. Ffxglow Wow Patch 1.3.1 (2005-03-22): Default is now 1 (On). Running the game from WoW exe directly keeps the file status as read only, however, the glow still goes on every UI refresh.I'm starting to get a feeling this is intentional...

All rights reserved. Config file status read only gets removed when ever you re-launch battle.net app. The one thing that makes it cool is when you get your character drunk. I hate those effects too.
Several days later, it was fixed for everyone. Patch 4.0.1 (2010-10-12): Removed from Interface Options. I can easily lose 20fps with it turned on.
