As long as the permissions are correct for .ssh and the underlying files are correct and the PermitRootLogin line of sshd_config is set to yes you should be good. Problem is not just with permission of file authorized_keys, also permissions of directories ".ssh" and ".." (home directory of user) should be properly set.
