There has GOT to be a way around this... For example, if you change the font size, the focus would switch to the worksheet, even though the dialog is still displayed. My problem was that I had "Outline" selected under Formatting options under the Find tab in the Editing dialog box. The test I just did was to go to another column with the default formatting and to search for the word "Completed" which is clearly visible in many of the cells.
I've tried highlighting the column in which I want to make the replacements, but same message. Took me about an hour to figure out. It's a frustrating workaround, though.
Very weird. I get so many documents to edit that have "No Proofing" in places that I routinely Select All, uncheck the "No Proofing" box, and make sure that the language is U.S. It did - and still I have the error.
