They work in clean rooms that are dust-free and with specialized hardware and software to retrieve your lost data. So, it can still be useful to run chkdsk /f on them from time to time.

Sometimes registry errors cause havoc after all. You can find it using the Windows Event Viewer. I assume that's the /r you referred to but it's late, I'm too tired to remember with certainty and too lazy to check right now.
